SUPPORT AB 2728: Secure a stable revenue source for the CAC
AB 2728 passes AEST&IM Committee and moves on to Revenue & Taxation Committee.
Yesterday, AB 2728, the bill that would transfer 20% of state sales and use tax revenues derived from the sales of art dealers, art auctioneers, and certain other business entities to be deposited in the State Treasury for allocation to the California Art Council at a time when the California state budget is balanced passed its first hurdle, the Assembly Entertainment, Sports, Tourism and Internet Media Committee. CAA executive director Lisa Caretto testified before the committee providing economic impact data from the CAC’s Competitive Advantage 2004 report, the Americans for the Arts Creative Industries 2008 report for California and the Arts and Economic Prosperity Report. Lobbyist Kathy Lynch representing CAA, California Association of Museums and the California Alliance for Arts Education also testified in support of the bill. CAC deputy director Marilyn Nielsen provided CAC program information to the committee. Click here for the committee analysis. Voting NO: Assembly Members Sharon Runner (vice-chair) R-Lancaster, George Plescia R-San Diego and Audra Strickland R-Ventura. Voting YES: Assembly Members Betty Karnette (chair) D-Long Beach, Joe Coto D-San San Jose, Mike Davis D-Los Angeles, Kevin de León D-Los Angeles, Fiona Ma D-San Francisco and Sandré Swanson D-Oakland.
