1. CAA Board President is participating in a panel at California Imagined: The Arts of the Golden State Conference in Sacramento.
CAA Board President Brad Erickson is participating in the Arts and Social Policy: Tools to Strengthen California Communities panel at the 20th Annual Envisioning California Conference on Friday, September 19 at the Sacramento Convention Center in downtown Sacramento. This conference begins on Thursday evening with a welcome reception and dinner, and is presented by The Center for California Studies / California State University, Sacramento. Read more...
2. SB 1369 California Remote Caller Bingo Act will expand fundraising opportunities for nonprofit organizations.
Because "there is a need to provide methods of fundraising to nonprofit organizations to enable them to provide essential services", Senators Gil Cedillo (D-Los Angeles) and Jim Battin (R-Palm Desert) introduced SB 1369 which would allow local governments to pass ordinances allowing nonprofits to take advantage of new tec hnology to conduct charitable bingo games. 3. CAA quoted in Senate analysis of AB 2471 Digital Arts Studio Partnership & Workforce Program Act.
"California's economy is heavily dependent on digital media arts because they are essential components to
the two largest employers, the information and entertainment industries," writes California Arts Advocates in support of AB 2471. Read more... This bill, until January 1, 2013, would establish the Digital Arts Studio Partnership and Workforce Program (DASP) to train youth in digital technolo gy skills. It would require the program to be administered by the Governor's office according to specified criteria and subject to the availability of funding for that purpose. It would require the office, as the host agency for the program, to contract with a nonprofit corporation meeting prescribed criteria to implement the program. Read more...
4. Arts Action Fund will host event at both national political conventions.
At the Democratic Convention in Denver tomorrow, the Americans for the Arts Action Fund is hosting a panel discussion about the future of the arts and arts education. The panel is moderated by former US Secretary of Education and former Governor of South Carolina Richard Riley. Featured speakers include Grammy Award-winning musician John Legend, Presidents of the US Conference of Mayors, Miami Mayor Manual Diaz, Philanthropist Sheila C. Johnson, NAMM President and CEO Joe Lamond and Americans for the Arts Action Fund President and CEO Robert L. Lynch. The Arts Action Fund will host a similar event at the Republican Convention in Minneapolis on September 2 with former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee as the moderator. Panelists are: Emmy Award-winning actor, dancer, choreographer and director Debbie Allen, Missouri Governor Matt Blunt, Chairman of the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities Adair Margo, US Representative Todd Tiahrt (Kansas), Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne and Americans for Arts Action Fund President and CEO Robert L. Lynch.
5. Democratic National Platform, presented tonight at convention includes support for the arts.
The draft of the 2008 Democratic National Platform includes: "Investment in the arts is an investment in our creativity and cultural heritage, in our diversity, in our communities, and in our humanity. We support art in schools and increased funding for the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities. We support the cultural exchange of artists around the world, spreading democracy and renewing American's status as a cultural and artistic center." Read more...
