1.  Bill authorizing ABC to issue special license to nonprofits who sell or auction wine signed by Governor.
AB 1964, introduced by Assembly Member Noreen Evans (D-Santa Rosa) and coauthored by Senator Patricia Wiggens (D-Santa Rosa) and Assembly Member Sam Blakeslee (R-San Luis Obispo) requires a nonprofit corporation to submit a specified license application with a $100 fee to the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) "to have upon their premises wine donated to the nonprofit corporation, to be sold at a later event" will take effect January 1, 2009. The special temporary on-sale and off-sale license shall be issued only 3 times in a calendar year.  Read more...

2.  CAA urges Assembly Speaker Karen Bass to appoint Assembly members to the Joint Legislative Committee on the Arts. 
The last time the Joint Legislative Committee on the Arts, chaired by Senator Jack Scott (D-Pasadena) met to hear testimony from arts stakeholders, educators and community leaders was in 2003.  Assembly Member Fabian Nunez did not fill the six Assembly vacancies during his term as Speaker of the Assembly.   Read more...

3.  Sign up and be counted!  Are you included in the Creative Industries Report? 
Americans for the Arts will publish its annual Creative Industries Report (compiled with Dun & Bradstreet data) in March 2009.  As of January 2008, California's report of 98,049 businesses included only 306 theaters, 27 dance companies and 42 opera companies. Is your organization being counted?  If it is, make sure your organization is properly identified by the Standard Identification Classification code.  Read more... The Creative Industries Report is a valuable tool when talking to elected officials about the numerous contributions the arts make to communities.
