Legislative Update: June 12, 2008
Working for more funding for more art for more people.
1. Arts funding bill stalled in the Assembly, and did not meet the deadline to pass out of its house of origin.
Because AB 2728, the 20% transfer to the CAC of sales tax generated by arts related purchases did not have the votes to pass out of the Assembly Appropriations Committee, the author pulled the bill from its agenda. In addition, there was concern that if the bill did reach the Assembly floor, it would not achieve the 2/3s vote necessary for passage. Read more...
2. Resolution commemorating the 30+ years of service of the California Arts Council and recognizing October 3, 2008 as California Arts Day passes the legislature and is chaptered by the Secretary of State. 3. California Arts Advocates Board welcomes and congratulates Board members.
CAA is pleased to announce that Kerry Adams Hapner, Director of Cultural Affairs, City of San Jose;
Deborah Cullinan, Executive Director, Intersection for the Arts and Co-Director Arts Forum San Francisco and Rebecca Rader, Director of Development, Government and Foundations, San Diego Opera have joined the CAA Board. They bring to the board a fresh perspective from their arts experience to CAA's efforts to advocate for an increased investment for the arts and for legislation that is favorable to arts organizations and the people they serve. 4. The House Interior Appropriations Subcommittee approves funding increase for the National Endowment for the Arts. Read more...
Yesterday in Washington DC, the House Interior Appropriations Subcommittee approved a $15.3 million increase for the NEA in its FY 2009 spending bill. This would bring the agency's budget to $160 million, including nearly $7 million more in direct grants than FY 2008 appropriations. The bill now goes to the full House Appropriations Committee, followed by a House floor vote. Take two minutes to email your member of Congress to support an increased investment in the arts through the NEA and one more minute to tell a friend that you did. Take Action
California members of the House Appropriations members are: Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-Los Angeles), Sam Farr (D-Santa Cruz), Barbara Lee (D-Oakland), Adam Schiff (D-Pasadena), Mike Honda (D-Campbell), Jerry Lewis (R-Redlands) and Ken Calvert (R-Riverside). The spending bill will soon go to the Senate Appropriations Committee chaired by California's Senator Dianne Feinstein.

American Evolution: Arts in the New Civic Life is the theme of the Americans for the Arts Annual Convention next week in Philadelphia. Registration is accepted on site at the Sheraton Philadelphia City Center.
